Sat 22nd Feb, 2025

Authorities in Potsdam have initiated an evacuation of a multi-family residential building after uncovering a substance resembling explosives during a police raid. This operation is linked to the arrest of an 18-year-old male suspect on Friday, who is believed to be involved in a planned attack.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the evacuation process began due to the potential bomb threat found during a search of the premises. The explosive-like object was safely removed and transported for disarmament at a different location.

Residents reported being asked to leave their homes for approximately thirty minutes, although the specific reason for the evacuation was not disclosed at the time. By late morning, residents were allowed to return as police units gradually withdrew from the scene.

The suspect was apprehended at Berlin's Brandenburg Airport (BER) and is currently in custody. Authorities have indicated that he allegedly intended to carry out a politically motivated attack in Berlin, specifically targeting the Israeli embassy, according to information obtained from security sources.

Further details suggest that the suspect may also be connected to the extremist group known as the Islamic State (IS). It is reported that he intended to leave Germany from the airport to join IS militants. The suspect is believed to be a Chechen residing in Potsdam, though it remains unclear if the searched apartment belonged to him.

This investigation continues as authorities assess the implications of the threat and monitor for any additional risks in the area.
