The CDU's party conference in Berlin is set against a backdrop of significant protests. CDU leader Friedrich Merz aims to introduce an immediate action program during the conference, while police anticipate various demonstrations in response to recent political developments.
As of February 3, reports indicate that a small group of protesters has obstructed the entrance to a CDU office in Leipzig. According to local news sources, around two dozen individuals staged a sit-in, although the office remained unoccupied. A message shared on social media by the Socialist Student Organization in Berlin and Leipzig stated their action was motivated by discontent with the CDU's recent policy proposals.
In recent days, public outrage has surged following the CDU's collaboration with the AfD on a controversial immigration bill. Organizers claim that approximately 650,000 people gathered in Berlin on Sunday to voice their opposition to what they perceive as a breach of democratic values, while police estimates suggest a turnout of around 160,000.
On the day of the CDU event, multiple demonstrations are planned, with police confirming that twelve protests have been registered in the vicinity of the party conference. These include several smaller gatherings of fewer than 100 participants and a larger rally expected to attract about 350 attendees.
To ensure security at the conference, authorities have deployed 700 officers, implementing roadblocks that may disrupt traffic around the venue. Although the police do not foresee violent confrontations from protesters towards CDU delegates, they remain vigilant after incidents of property damage and trespassing were reported during past protests.
Despite the protests primarily focusing on the CDU's immigration policies, the demonstrations also reflect broader societal concerns. Environmental groups such as Fridays For Future have condemned the party's actions, and numerous organizations have joined forces to advocate for more inclusive migration policies. Over 100 groups have petitioned the CDU to reconsider its rhetoric and approach to immigration, emphasizing the need for unity and respect for human rights.
As the CDU convenes, Merz plans to present his immediate action program, which aims to address economic and asylum policies. He has called for peaceful protests, affirming the right to demonstrate while urging against any form of violence.
