The Polish government has announced an extension of temporary border controls along its frontier with Germany, now set to remain in place until April 4, 2026. This decision, initially introduced in July 2025, aims to enhance security and manage migration flows through the region.
According to the Polish Interior Ministry, the measures are in response to ongoing migration pressures and aim to monitor the routes utilized by migrants traveling from the Baltic states through Poland to Western Europe. The extension also includes increased checks on the border with Lithuania.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski emphasized the necessity of these controls, stating the primary goal remains to prevent illegal immigration and to secure the border from potential threats posed by Belarus. Polish authorities, alongside EU officials, have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating an influx of migrants from crisis-stricken areas in an effort to exert pressure on the European Union.
Poland's border controls were initially implemented as a direct response to similar measures enacted by Germany, which began conducting sporadic checks at its borders to curb irregular migration starting in October 2023. This policy change was part of a broader strategy by the German government to strengthen border security amid rising concerns over migration.
Notably, the Polish response was also influenced by pressure from right-wing citizen patrols within the country, which had taken it upon themselves to monitor and deter illegal crossings. These groups had expressed concerns that Germany was deporting migrants who had not previously been in Poland, heightening tensions between the two nations.
As the situation continues to evolve, Polish authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to manage border security effectively. The ongoing controls are a reflection of broader regional challenges surrounding migration and border management in Europe.
