On February 18, 2025, a serious incident occurred at Toronto Pearson Airport when a Delta regional jet flipped over during landing, resulting in injuries to 18 individuals aboard the aircraft. The plane, which had originated from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, was carrying a total of 80 people, including 76 passengers and four crew members.
According to initial reports from Delta Airlines, three individuals suffered serious injuries, one of whom was a child. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and all passengers and crew members were accounted for following the accident.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed relief at the news that all individuals on the flight were safe and commended the prompt actions of emergency responders, airport personnel, and the flight crew in ensuring passenger safety.
Weather conditions at the time of the incident were challenging, as Pearson Airport had been experiencing strong winds and frigid temperatures after a snowstorm had deposited over 22 centimeters of snow in the region. Despite these conditions, airport officials noted that the runway was dry and there were no crosswind conditions present at the time of the crash.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has initiated an investigation into the incident, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. The precise cause of the crash remains undetermined as investigators work to gather more information.
In the aftermath of the crash, Toronto Pearson Airport was temporarily closed for over two hours to facilitate emergency response efforts, but operations resumed soon after. This incident follows a series of recent aviation accidents in North America, including a tragic helicopter collision in Washington that claimed 67 lives, and other fatal crashes involving medical transport and passenger planes.
The focus now remains on providing care for those injured and identifying the factors that led to this unfortunate event.
