Peskov: European Nations Seek Continuation of War

Mon 3rd Mar, 2025

In a recent statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov suggested that various European nations are inclined to continue the conflict in Ukraine. Peskov characterized the current geopolitical landscape, asserting that while some countries, including the United States and Russia, desire peace, others, referred to as the 'war party', remain committed to ongoing hostilities.

Peskov's remarks followed a contentious meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump. He emphasized that Zelensky's refusal to acknowledge Russian annexations of Ukrainian territories illustrates a lack of understanding of the on-ground realities. In his view, this stance indicates a broader unwillingness among certain nations to engage in constructive dialogue.

Following a recent summit in London, Peskov stated that Russia is observing the situation from a distance, focusing on its relations with the U.S. He noted that Trump's administration has gained significance in Russian eyes, contrasting it with the perceived decline of European solidarity. He suggested that Europe's support for the war in Ukraine has become a defining feature of their unity, despite the evident fragmentation within the European bloc.

Moreover, Peskov dismissed the efforts of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron as largely irrelevant to Moscow's agenda. He cited a lack of a cohesive plan from European leaders and questioned their capability to support Ukraine effectively, given their current crises.

U.S. officials have indicated that a proposed economic agreement with Ukraine is currently off the table. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that such a deal is impossible without a peace agreement in place. He underscored the need for territorial concessions from Ukraine that would help facilitate security guarantees from Russia.

The Ukrainian military reported a significant uptick in drone activity, claiming to have intercepted 46 out of 83 Russian drones in a recent defensive operation. This incident illustrates the ongoing military tensions and highlights the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces as they continue to counter Russian advances.

In light of the turmoil, Zelensky's government continues to express the necessity of U.S. support. Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Olexii Makeiew, stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with the U.S., indicating that while Europe can contribute significantly, American involvement remains crucial for Ukraine's future.

As the situation evolves, discussions surrounding a potential ceasefire and peace negotiations persist, with European leaders advocating for new frameworks to address the conflict. The complexities of international relations in this context underline the precarious nature of the ongoing war and the varying interests of global powers.
