Passenger Association Proposes Successor for Railway Chief

The departure of Richard Lutz, the current CEO of the railway company, has been deemed a necessary shift by the passenger advocacy group Pro Bahn. In light of this change, the organization has put forward a specific candidate for the position.

Lutz's successor should ideally have a background in the transportation sector and possess a comprehensive understanding of Germany's railway system. According to Lukas Iffländer, the association's national chairman, it is crucial that the new leader is not someone who has been entrenched within the railway corporation for an extended period.

Pro Bahn has nominated Anna-Theresa Korbutt, the managing director of Hamburg's public transport authority, as a potential successor. Korbutt is known for her willingness to take a stand, particularly evident in her outspoken views during the discussions surrounding the funding of the Germany ticket.

Iffländer emphasized the importance of assembling a competent team around the new CEO to effectively dismantle the entrenched structures within the organization that often stifle innovative approaches. He noted that merely replacing the top executive would not suffice; instead, a thorough organizational overhaul is necessary to empower those who are currently impeded from implementing progressive changes.

This change in leadership comes as Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced the early termination of Lutz's contract. Lutz will remain in his role until a successor is appointed, with Schnieder aiming to resolve this matter by September 22, when he plans to unveil a new strategy for the struggling railway system in Germany.

Iffländer supports the decision to part ways with Lutz, viewing it as a critical step towards breaking away from outdated methods. However, he cautioned that this leadership transition alone will not immediately resolve the operational and financial challenges currently facing the railway company.
