Alludo has launched an updated version of its virtualization software, Parallels Desktop, designed for macOS. This new release, version 20.3, although it features a minimal version increment, introduces a host of notable enhancements.
Among the key improvements is the integrated FEX emulator, allowing users to run a variety of x86 games and applications, particularly older titles, on ARM-based machines. Previously, Parallels Desktop had begun supporting Intel virtual machines, albeit with limited performance. Users can expect further enhancements in performance moving forward.
Additionally, macOS virtual machines that previously lacked various features are now set to receive significant upgrades. This includes general USB support through a new passthrough capability, enabling innovative workflows, as stated by Alludo. However, it is important to note that this support is still in its early stages; audio devices and iPhones are not yet fully functional with this feature. Furthermore, Parallels Desktop must be run on a Sequoia machine with macOS 15 to utilize these capabilities.
Furthermore, users of the medical application Dragon Medical One, which focuses on speech-based clinical documentation, will receive direct support starting in May. This includes compatibility with the Coherence mode, which allows Windows windows to be viewed on the Mac interface. Alludo has collaborated with the application's manufacturer to ensure compatibility with the Nuance PowerMic as well.
In terms of installation, users can now approve admin rights via Touch ID, enhancing security and convenience. There is also an improved activation control system for Macs managed through Mobile Device Management (MDM).
Another significant update is for users of the popular virtual camera solution, OBS. They can now utilize a camera embedded in macOS directly within Windows applications, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, offering seamless integration.
Parallels Desktop is available in various versions. After a free trial period, the standard version is priced at 75 euros annually (with a regular price of 100 euros). Additionally, there are Pro and Business versions, as well as an Enterprise variant. Developers are encouraged to opt for the Pro version, which allows for increased RAM and virtual CPUs, currently available for 90 euros per year (with a standard price of 120 euros).
