OpenAI Eyes Acquisition of Jony Ive's Start-Up for Innovative AI Device

OpenAI is reportedly interested in acquiring a stealth spin-off from Jony Ive's design firm, LoveFrom, as the tech giant seeks to develop a novel artificial intelligence device that operates without a screen. This potential acquisition comes amid a backdrop of previous failures in the market for dedicated AI devices.

Jony Ive, known for his influential role as Apple's former chief designer, has shown a keen interest in artificial intelligence. Last year, there were indications of collaboration between Ive and OpenAI, further fueling speculation about this latest development. According to reports from the Silicon Valley publication, The Information, OpenAI has been in discussions to purchase the start-up, which is believed to be named 'io Products'.

OpenAI is rumored to be willing to invest at least $500 million in this venture. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, is also said to have involvement in the start-up, highlighting the interconnectedness of his various business endeavors.

Currently, the product from io Products is in the early stages of development, with no finalized hardware available as of yet. The company occupies a significant block in San Francisco, a property that Ive purchased to facilitate his business initiatives. Notably, Emerson Collective, the investment firm associated with Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs, has invested in this venture alongside other prominent former Apple designers, including Evans Hankey and Tang Tan, who have extensive experience in product design.

The discussions surrounding the acquisition are not limited to a straightforward purchase; there are also considerations for a potential partnership between OpenAI and io Products. However, a partnership would limit OpenAI's access to the hardware that could be developed.

OpenAI aims to leverage its software capabilities to create a portable version of its ChatGPT voice mode, which has already demonstrated promising performance in its current iteration. Despite some controversies regarding voice synthesis, the demand for new, innovative AI gadgets persists, particularly those that do not intrude on social interactions in the same way that smartphones do.

Historically, attempts to introduce screenless AI devices to the market have met with mixed success. Products like the AI Pin, developed by former Apple employees, have struggled to find a foothold. Nevertheless, Jony Ive remains optimistic that a well-designed AI gadget could resonate with consumers who prefer less disruptive technology.
