Germany’s Hidden Gender Inequality: Extra Responsibilities for Men
Section: politics
This weekend, the German government opened its doors to the public, inviting thousands to explore the Chancellor's Office and various ministries in Berlin. The annual open house event allowed citizens to engage directly with government officials, ask questions, and take photos.
During the event, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil was available to interact with attendees outdoors in the government district, while Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul engaged in discussions with visitors within his ministry. The head of the Chancellery, Thorsten Frei, was surrounded by guests eager for selfies, and later, Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived to address inquiries from the public.
Among the attractions was a helicopter used by the Chancellor, which visitors could view on the grounds of the Chancellery. Frei also addressed a resident's concerns regarding the substantial costs associated with expanding the Chancellery, which reportedly amount to approximately EUR770 million. He acknowledged the public debate surrounding the necessity of the expansion, noting that the decision had been made by a previous government.
The first day of the open house was deemed a resounding success, with the government press office reporting that despite heavy rainfall, thousands of people turned out to gain a glimpse behind the scenes of government operations. Attendance swelled on Sunday as the weather improved, attracting even more curious visitors to the government district.
In addition to the ministries, various agencies and institutions set up displays for the public. At the Federal Ministry of Defense, attendees could examine military vehicles up close, while others had the opportunity to learn about the global operations of the Federal Intelligence Service. The program also included exhibitions, children's activities, and live performances.
The open house event is held annually to give citizens insight into the workings of their government, and it consistently draws large crowds eager to participate.
