Oliver Ruhnert Returns to 1. FC Union Berlin Following Political Bid

Thu 3rd Apr, 2025

Oliver Ruhnert, the former manager of 1. FC Union Berlin, has resumed his role at the club after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Bundestag. His contract was temporarily suspended during the election campaign, but he is now back in action.

In a recent media briefing, Sports Managing Director Horst Heldt confirmed that Ruhnert is re-engaging with the club as a chief scout, assisting in the strategic planning for the upcoming season. Heldt expressed his satisfaction with Ruhnert's return, indicating that he values his contributions to the team.

Ruhnert, who has a notable background in football management, previously served as the head of youth development at FC Schalke 04 before joining Union Berlin in 2017. Initially starting as a chief scout, he later became the sports director, achieving significant success with the club. Earlier this season, Ruhnert chose to step back into the chief scout position, pausing his activities in January 2025 to focus on his campaign for the political party led by Sahra Wagenknecht.

After his party failed to gain representation in the Bundestag, Ruhnert signaled his intention to return to professional football, leading to his reinstatement at Union Berlin. With his wealth of experience and insight into the game, his return is seen as a valuable asset for the club as it prepares for the new challenges ahead.
