The 190th Oktoberfest in Munich has come to a close, marking a memorable season for the festival. According to officials, this year's event was characterized by both extraordinary highs and unexpected challenges.
Christian Scharpf, the city's economic advisor, described the festival as a 'rollercoaster experience.' The event started off with record-breaking temperatures, creating an inviting atmosphere for attendees. However, the festive spirit was tested when overcrowding incidents occurred on several occasions, particularly on the middle Saturday of the festival. Furthermore, a bomb threat on a preceding Wednesday led to a temporary shutdown of the entire event area, challenging organizers and attendees alike.
The 2025 Oktoberfest will be remembered for these significant incidents. Two days during the festival saw the grounds closed due to overcrowding, and one day was nearly entirely lost as authorities conducted extensive searches following the bomb threat, which led to the area being secured for several hours. Notably, the opening day of the festival reached a record temperature of 31 degrees Celsius, marking it as the hottest Oktoberfest day on record.
Scharpf emphasized the collaborative efforts of all involved in managing these situations effectively. After the bomb threat, the festival reopened at 5:30 PM, and the positive response from the public was palpable. Many attendees returned to the festival grounds, eager to celebrate despite the earlier disruptions.
On Friday, October 3, the festival grounds again experienced overcrowding, resulting in a closure as approximately 300,000 individuals filled the area during the afternoon.
Scharpf is expected to provide a comprehensive report on the festival's attendance figures later today. Preliminary estimates indicated that around 3.5 million visitors attended the event by the halfway point, a slight decrease from the 3.6 million recorded in the previous year.
Former mayor Christian Ude provided a succinct reflection on the festival's ups and downs, highlighting the challenges of managing large crowds and fluctuating attendance.
Despite the challenges, the overall atmosphere remained vibrant, with attendees enjoying the festivities throughout the duration of the event. Scharpf noted that the lively spirit and celebratory mood contributed significantly to the festival's success.
