In a significant show of solidarity, North Korea's leader has expressed unwavering support for Russia in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This commitment was made during a meeting with Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, as reported by North Korea's state-run news agency, KCNA.

Kim Jong-un stated that North Korea is prepared to back all measures taken by Russia to address the causes of the Ukraine crisis without reservation. Lavrov's visit to North Korea was marked by a friendly and trusting atmosphere, according to KCNA.

During the discussions, Kim conveyed his strong belief that the Russian army and its citizens would ultimately prevail in their efforts to defend the nation's dignity and core interests. He also praised President Vladimir Putin for his exceptional leadership qualities.

In a video released by the Russian Defense Ministry, Lavrov and Kim were seen shaking hands, underscoring the growing ties between the two nations. Lavrov indicated that Putin is looking forward to establishing direct communications with Kim in the near future.

Previously, Lavrov acknowledged North Korea's support for Russia against Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region. He noted that North Korean troops have heroically assisted the Russian military in repelling Ukrainian advances, as stated by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Kim's assurance of support has reinforced the strategic partnership between North Korea and Russia, as both nations work collaboratively against perceived external threats that escalate tensions in Northeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

In August 2024, Ukraine launched a surprise offensive in the Kursk area, which, with the involvement of North Korean soldiers, resulted in Russia regaining control over the territory. Following this, both Lavrov and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui reaffirmed their commitment to counteracting hegemonic ambitions from outside actors.

North Korea stands as one of Russia's crucial allies in the conflict, having dispatched thousands of soldiers to assist in the war effort and providing military supplies including shells and missiles. In April, North Korea confirmed the deployment of troops to Russia, further solidifying their alliance.

Last year, Russia and North Korea formalized a comprehensive strategic partnership that includes mutual defense clauses, indicating a deepening military collaboration.
