Tragedy in Oaxaca: Nine Tourists Found Murdered Amid Rising Violence

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

Oaxaca, Mexico - The allure of sunny beaches and vibrant culture draws millions of tourists to Mexico each year. However, recent events have cast a shadow over this popular destination, as a tragic incident has unfolded. Since January, a total of 16 tourists have reportedly gone missing, and the discovery of nine bodies has shocked the community.

The victims, a group of young individuals, were last seen dining in a restaurant in Oaxaca when they were abducted in January. In late February, another group of nine tourists, comprising five men and four women aged between 19 and 30, disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The bodies of these nine individuals were recently located approximately 400 kilometers away from where they had vanished, inside an abandoned vehicle close to a highway in San José Miahuatlán. The grisly scene revealed four bodies in the trunk and five others covered by a tarp, all showing signs of extreme violence, including severed hands.

While initial reports suggest that the deceased were students from Tlaxcala seeking a beach vacation, further investigations are exploring potential connections to criminal activities. According to local media outlets, there are suspicions that some members of the group may have had ties to the criminal organization known as 'Los Zacapoaxtlas'. Evidence from a WhatsApp group indicates they may have been plotting bank robberies or other thefts, which could have led them into conflict with dangerous individuals.

Authorities, including the police and district attorney, are currently working to unravel the circumstances behind the disappearances and murders. As of now, no suspects have been identified, but the nature of the kidnappings and killings suggests involvement from drug cartels. Despite Mexico's reputation for violent crime, the Oaxaca region has typically been regarded as a safe travel destination.

The fate of the remaining seven tourists who went missing in January remains uncertain, adding to the growing concerns surrounding safety in tourist areas.
