New Coalition Agreement: Senior Citizens to Receive Additional EUR2000

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

In a significant development, the newly formed coalition government comprising CDU, CSU, and SPD has reached an agreement that promises enhanced financial support for retirees. The coalition has finalized a contract, and while formal details are to be revealed later today, preliminary information indicates that the discussions were intense, particularly concerning pension reforms.

The SPD has successfully advocated for the maintenance of the pension level at 48 percent until 2031; however, this will lead to increased contributions from workers. Additionally, the coalition has outlined plans to implement a new initiative known as the 'Aktivrente,' aimed at providing further financial incentives for senior citizens who choose to continue working after reaching retirement age.

Starting in 2026, eligible retirees may earn up to EUR2000 per month tax-free, allowing them to supplement their income while remaining active in the workforce. This measure is seen as a direct fulfillment of a campaign promise by the Union parties and is expected to be placed at the forefront of the coalition's agenda.

Carsten Linnemann, the CDU General Secretary who conceptualized the 'Aktivrente,' is anticipated to take on the role of Minister for Economic and Social Affairs, should he be confirmed in the cabinet. This position would place important social issues, such as pensions and basic income support, within the purview of the economic ministry. The SPD is expected to oversee the Ministry of Labor, with Bärbel Bas being a potential candidate for the ministerial role.

Currently, retirees have the option to work alongside receiving their pensions. Their additional earnings are subject to taxation but do not impact the pension amount directly. Furthermore, working retirees can voluntarily make contributions to their pension fund, allowing them to accumulate additional pension points, thereby increasing their retirement benefits in subsequent years.

It remains uncertain how the new 'Aktivrente' will affect existing regulations regarding pension contributions and benefits. Questions also linger about whether retirees who opted for early retirement will qualify for the additional tax-free earnings.
