Nationwide Speed Monitoring Begins: Police Crack Down on Speeders

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

Starting today, a significant speed monitoring initiative is being implemented across nearly all of Germany. From April 7 to April 13, 2025, law enforcement agencies will intensify their efforts to combat speeding and aggressive driving.

This initiative, officially referred to as 'Operation Speed', is part of a broader European campaign aimed at enhancing road safety. The operation will culminate in a special 'Speed Marathon' event scheduled for April 9, where heightened speed checks will be conducted for a 24-hour period beginning at 6 AM.

While most federal states are participating in this initiative, residents of Berlin and Saarland will not experience additional speed enforcement during this week, although standard speed traps will remain operational.

Here's a breakdown of the specific measures being implemented by various states:

  • Baden-Württemberg: Continuous monitoring throughout the week with specific focus areas to be determined by local police.
  • Bavaria: Intensive speed checks will occur exclusively on April 9, with details about the locations released in advance.
  • Brandenburg: Speed enforcement will be rigorous from April 7 to 13, with targeted operations against motorcycle speeders on the 7th and 8th, followed by increased checks on main roads starting April 9.
  • Bremen: Ongoing speed checks throughout the week, with no specific locations disclosed.
  • Hamburg: Enforcement will be active all week, with heightened scrutiny on April 9 near schools and childcare facilities.
  • Hesse: Increased speed monitoring will take place throughout the entire week.
  • Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Similar to Hesse, this state will enforce speed limits rigorously throughout the week.
  • Lower Saxony: Comprehensive speed monitoring will be conducted, with no special focus on April 9.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia: Continuous speed enforcement will occur, although no special initiatives are planned for April 9.
  • Rhineland-Palatinate: There will be enhanced checks throughout the week, with particular emphasis on April 9.
  • Saxony: Speed checks will be active from April 7 to 13, focusing primarily around schools.
  • Saxony-Anhalt: This state will also participate, with intensified enforcement on April 9.
  • Schleswig-Holstein: A comprehensive approach through the week, targeting aggressive driving behaviors in sensitive areas such as hospitals.
  • Thuringia: Participation is limited to the Speed Marathon on April 9, focusing on accident-prone locations.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to adhere to speed limits during this heightened enforcement period, as speeding remains the leading cause of traffic accidents. This initiative is not only a national effort but also part of a larger European strategy to promote safer driving habits.
