In a significant diplomatic gesture, Trinidad and Tobago has awarded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of the Republic, the nation's highest civilian honor. This ceremony took place at the President's House in St Ann's, near the capital city of Port of Spain, marking a historic occasion as this award is being conferred for the first time to a foreign leader.
During his two-day visit to the Caribbean nation, Modi emphasized the importance of enhancing economic collaboration between India and Trinidad and Tobago. The visit is particularly noteworthy as it is Modi's inaugural official trip to Trinidad and Tobago since he took office over ten years ago. The country has a significant Indian diaspora, with over a third of the population tracing their ancestry to Indian roots.
In his remarks following the award presentation, Modi highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, which date back to 1845 when the first Indian indentured laborers arrived to work on sugar and cocoa plantations following the end of slavery. Between 1845 and 1917, more than 140,000 laborers made Trinidad and Tobago their home, fostering a deep cultural connection that persists today.
Modi stated that this honor symbolizes the enduring friendship between India and Trinidad and Tobago. He remarked that both nations have evolved from their colonial pasts to establish themselves as proud democracies and influential entities in the contemporary world. His visit aims to reinforce these longstanding ties further.
Discussions during the visit centered on fostering investments in critical sectors such as energy, health, and security. Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced a series of investments in medical, energy, and technological infrastructure, reflecting a commitment to strategic partnership between the two countries. She characterized the visit as a transformative moment in diplomatic relations.
Modi also announced that the sixth generation of citizens of Indian descent living in Trinidad and Tobago would be eligible to apply for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards. These cards will facilitate their ability to reside and work in India, further strengthening ties between the Indian government and its diaspora.
Currently, Modi is on a diplomatic tour that spans five nations, including Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. His next stop is Argentina, where he is scheduled to engage in discussions with President Javier Milei.
