Mexican President Sheinbaum Rejects Trump's Military Proposal in Drug War

Sun 4th May, 2025

In a recent public address, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly rejected an offer from U.S. President Donald Trump to send American troops to assist in combating drug trafficking in Mexico. This response comes amidst heightened tensions between the two nations, especially following Trump's return to the political arena.

During a public event, President Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of Mexico's sovereignty, stating that the nation's territory is inviolable and cannot be compromised. This declaration followed a report indicating a growing strain in communications between the two leaders.

Sheinbaum recounted a recent phone conversation with Trump, during which he inquired about potential U.S. support in addressing organized crime. Trump's suggestion included the deployment of U.S. military forces, a proposal Sheinbaum categorically dismissed. She reiterated that Mexico would never accept the presence of U.S. soldiers on its soil.

Despite rejecting military intervention, Sheinbaum expressed her willingness to collaborate with the U.S. government through enhanced intelligence sharing and other cooperative measures. She also urged Trump to take action against the illegal arms trade that fuels violence in Mexico.

The drug-related violence in Mexico has been a persistent issue, with the country grappling with powerful drug cartels for many years. Since the controversial launch of a military operation against drug trafficking in 2006, nearly 450,000 homicides have been recorded, with a significant number of firearms used by criminal groups reportedly originating from the United States.

In a recent interview, Trump claimed that he had offered assistance to the Mexican government in confronting drug cartels but was turned down. He hinted at the possibility of future measures, stating that the current situation is untenable and requires action.

Trump has previously criticized the Mexican government for its alleged inaction regarding illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the U.S. Recently, he escalated pressure on Mexico, indicating potential tariffs as a means to compel action.

Moreover, earlier this month, Trump provoked further controversy by claiming that Mexico is entirely controlled by criminal organizations that pose a serious threat to U.S. national security.
