Merz Prepares for Break Following Coalition Negotiations Ahead of Chancellor Vote

Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is looking forward to a brief respite after an intense period of coalition negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) following the recent federal elections. With the prospect of assuming the role of Chancellor in early May, Merz has expressed the need for a short vacation to recuperate from the demanding political activities.

In an interview, Merz noted that the transition from the electoral campaign to coalition discussions was particularly taxing. He indicated that the negotiations, which followed preliminary talks and constitutional amendments, have left him in need of some downtime. He emphasized the importance of taking a few days to relax before undertaking the responsibilities of his new position.

Before Merz officially steps into his role, the coalition agreement must receive internal approval from both the CDU and SPD. The CDU has scheduled a small party conference for this purpose, while the SPD is conducting a member survey that will last for two weeks. The Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), has already given its consent to the coalition agreement.

Merz is optimistic about the timeline for the new government, predicting that it will be in place by May 6. Reflecting on the coalition negotiations, he described the process as more constructive than media portrayals suggested. He attributed some of the positive atmosphere to the CSU leader, Markus Söder, whose engaging style contributed to a more relaxed negotiation environment.

As the political landscape shifts towards a new government formation, Merz's focus will soon turn to the tasks and challenges that await him as Chancellor. His recent experiences in coalition building will likely influence his approach to governance and collaboration across party lines.
