Kretschmer Addresses Russian Aggression at WWII Commemoration in Torgau

Fri 25th Apr, 2025

During the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the meeting between American and Soviet soldiers in Torgau, Saxony's Minister President, Michael Kretschmer, openly criticized Russia's ongoing military aggression in Ukraine. The event took place in the presence of Russian Ambassador Sergej Netschajew, who faced scrutiny for attending amidst the current geopolitical tensions.

Netschajew spoke in German, emphasizing the importance of remembering fallen soldiers. However, his participation was controversial, as Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev had previously called for the ambassador's exclusion from the event. Kretschmer noted, "It would have been more appropriate if representatives from Ukraine, Georgia, or Belarus could have joined us." This remark highlighted the sensitivities surrounding the Russian presence at such a significant historical event.

While addressing Netschajew directly, Kretschmer condemned Russia's actions, stating that the country initiated an unlawful war against Ukraine as early as 2014. He stressed that the responsibility to end the conflict lies solely with Russia. His comments were met with mixed reactions from the audience, including some boos.

Kretschmer also acknowledged the sacrifices made by Red Army soldiers during World War II, noting that many who lost their lives were not only Russians but also Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Georgians. He reiterated the historical context of the event, which serves to remember the shared sacrifices made during the war.

The Russian ambassador, who wore the St. George ribbon--a symbol historically associated with the Soviet victory but criticized in recent years as a propaganda tool--defended his presence by stating that he felt welcomed and had the opportunity to express Russia's position. Despite the tense atmosphere, he engaged with attendees at the ceremony.

This event underscores the ongoing complexities in addressing historical narratives while navigating current political realities, particularly in the context of Russia's actions in Ukraine and the broader implications for European security and international relations.
