Media Markt Expands as Saturn Shrinks: A Shift in Germany's Electronics Retail Landscape

Sun 8th Jun, 2025

In recent months, a noticeable transformation has taken place in the German electronics retail sector, particularly impacting the Saturn chain. Across various cities in Germany, numerous Saturn locations have been shuttered, only to be replaced by Media Markt stores. This trend raises questions about the future of the Saturn brand.

The transition from Saturn to Media Markt is evident in several locations, notably in North Rhine-Westphalia, including cities like Neuss, Hilden, Cologne, and Aachen. Reports indicate that a significant number of Saturn outlets have already been converted into Media Markt establishments. As of a few years ago, there were approximately 150 Saturn stores in Germany; by autumn 2024, this number had dwindled to just 87, according to Ceconomy, the parent company overseeing both retail chains. Since the beginning of this year, Media Markt has opened in 14 additional Saturn sites, with plans for more conversions in the pipeline, leading to an increase in Media Markt locations to over 300 nationwide.

Ceconomy attributes this strategic shift to a growing consumer perception that differentiating between the two brands is becoming increasingly unnecessary. As a result, the company is investing in the modernization and development of its retail spaces. A spokesperson for Ceconomy confirmed that the company is indeed reopening several former Saturn stores under the Media Markt name and intends to continue this approach.

Despite the ongoing changes, Ceconomy has emphasized that the Saturn brand will not entirely vanish. It remains a vital part of the company's strategy. However, the exact number of existing Saturn locations and the future of additional conversions were not disclosed by the company.

For customers, the implications of this shift are relatively minor, as the product assortments between Media Markt and Saturn are quite similar. Many items are available at both chains, and promotional offers tend to be consistent across the two. Ceconomy aims to create a more integrated shopping experience by enhancing the connection between the brands. In the forthcoming week, the company plans to merge the loyalty programs for both retailers, which will allow customers to earn and redeem points across either brand seamlessly. All previously accumulated points from past purchases will also be consolidated.

In the broader European context, the Media Markt brand is now the sole representative in countries such as Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland, where Saturn outlets have either closed or transitioned into Media Markt stores over recent years. By the end of March, Ceconomy reported having over 1,000 stores across 11 countries.

The origins of Saturn date back to 1961 with its first store opening in Cologne, while the inaugural Media Markt opened in Munich in 1979. The competitive landscape shifted in 1990 when Media Markt acquired Saturn, and several years later, both brands were under the majority ownership of Metro AG. Ceconomy emerged as a standalone entity in 2017, following a corporate restructuring from Metro.
