Mayra Vriesema to Succeed Robert Habeck in Bundestag

Mon 25th Aug, 2025

In a significant political shift, Mayra Vriesema, a 26-year-old politician from Schleswig-Holstein, will take over the Bundestag seat previously held by Robert Habeck, the former Federal Minister for Economic Affairs. Vriesema, who was placed fifth on the Green Party's state list during the last federal election, has expressed her enthusiasm for her new role as she steps into the position vacated by Habeck.

Vriesema is currently pursuing her master's degree in international politics and international law and hails from the Nordfriesland district. She announced her new appointment on social media, sharing her excitement and gratitude towards Habeck for his contributions to the party and his trust in her capabilities.

Robert Habeck, who has been a prominent figure in German politics and served as both Deputy Chancellor and Minister in the Ampel coalition government alongside the SPD and FDP, has confirmed that he will resign from his Bundestag mandate effective September 1. His decision comes in the wake of significant electoral challenges faced by the coalition, which he attributed to both the parties involved and his vision of positioning the Greens at the center of German politics to stabilize the political landscape amid the decline of traditional parties.

During his tenure, Habeck's focus was on economic policies and environmental sustainability, but he has acknowledged that the recent electoral results reflect a broader rejection of the coalition's approach. His resignation marks a pivotal moment for both him and the Green Party as they navigate the future of their political strategy.

With Vriesema's ascension to the Bundestag, the Green Party is likely to continue its efforts to influence policy from the opposition, emphasizing progressive initiatives and environmental concerns. Her academic background in politics and law may provide a fresh perspective as she enters the political arena.
