Matthias Platzeck Defends Multiple Visits to Moscow Amid Ukraine Conflict

Sun 20th Jul, 2025

Matthias Platzeck, the former chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and ex-Minister-President of Brandenburg, has faced scrutiny for his numerous trips to Moscow since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Notably, he has traveled to the Russian capital at least nine times for discussions, as revealed by a collaborative investigation conducted by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Spiegel, and the Russian opposition platform The Insider.

In light of ongoing criticism regarding these visits, Platzeck has adopted a proactive stance, articulating his motivations for engaging in dialogue with Russian officials. He expressed concern over pressing questions affecting many individuals, not just in Germany, highlighting the quest for a resolution to the ongoing conflict and contemplating the future shape of international relations.

Platzeck raised critical queries regarding the reliance on military escalation and security measures against Russia as a sustainable strategy. He questioned whether the long-standing approach of 'change through rapprochement' is now obsolete, suggesting a need for a broader discussion about diplomatic avenues and arms control.

Emphasizing the significance of 'active diplomacy on multiple fronts,' he urged for a discourse that transcends suspicion and confrontation, advocating for constructive engagement as a means to foster societal unity.

According to flight records and investigations, Platzeck was accompanied on some of these trips by Ronald Pofalla, a former chief of the chancellery, and Martin Hoffmann, head of the German-Russian Forum. However, he refrained from disclosing specific details about his meetings or the individuals he interacted with on the Russian side.

Platzeck clarified that he is acting in a personal capacity, without any official mandate or role, and categorically denied speculations regarding discussions related to the gas industry or the Nord Stream pipeline. He emphasized that his conversations did not revolve around economic interests.

In addition to his Moscow visits, Platzeck and Pofalla had previously confirmed their participation in three confidential meetings with Russian counterparts in Baku, Azerbaijan, over the past few years. These discussions included notable figures, such as Ralf Stegner, a member of the Bundestag, and Viktor Subkow, the chairman of Gazprom's board of directors, who attended the most recent gathering in April.
