Matthias Miersch Elected as SPD Parliamentary Leader with 83.2% Support

Wed 7th May, 2025

Matthias Miersch, the former Secretary-General of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been elected as the new leader of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag. In a secret ballot, Miersch received 99 out of 119 valid votes cast, translating to a support rate of 83.2%. The election saw 18 votes against him and 2 abstentions.

This outcome marks a slight decrease in support compared to his predecessor, Lars Klingbeil, who took over the role following the SPD's disappointing performance in the February federal elections. Miersch was the sole candidate for the position, underscoring his prominent role within the party.

At 56 years old, Miersch is recognized as a close ally of SPD leader Lars Klingbeil and is noted for his association with the party's left wing. He has served as a spokesperson for the Parliamentary Left, representing the progressive faction within the SPD, before stepping into the role of Secretary-General in October 2024 after the unexpected resignation of Kevin Kühnert.

In his new capacity, Miersch will succeed notable figures in the SPD such as Klingbeil, Rolf Mützenich, and Andrea Nahles. As the leader of the SPD in the Bundestag, Miersch is expected to play a vital role in the dynamics of the new black-red coalition government, particularly in maintaining support for the Vice Chancellor over the coming years.

Miersch has expressed his commitment to infusing the coalition agreement with the social democratic values of the SPD, aiming to translate these principles into effective and equitable legislation. This commitment is crucial as the coalition seeks to navigate the complexities of governance while addressing the needs of the populace.

Additionally, the parliamentary group elected Dirk Wiese as the new first parliamentary manager, succeeding Katja Mast, who will transition into a role as a state secretary within the Ministry of Labor.
