Massive Illegal Cigarette Factory Uncovered in Italy

In a significant crackdown on illicit operations, Italian authorities have uncovered one of the largest illegal cigarette manufacturing facilities in Europe, located in the southeastern region of the country. The discovery was made by the Financial Police at an industrial site in Stornara, approximately 100 kilometers from Bari, a city near the Adriatic coast.

The facility, equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, has the capacity to produce around two million cigarettes daily. Authorities estimate the value of the production plant at approximately EUR1.3 million. During the operation, law enforcement officials seized about 13 tons of finished cigarettes, 165 bags of processed tobacco, and over 130 pallets of packaging materials.

If the products had entered the market, it is believed that the Italian government and the European Union would have lost around EUR3.2 million in taxes and duties. The illegal profits generated by the factory were estimated at a staggering EUR350,000 each day. Furthermore, investigators also discovered an additional production site linked to the same network in the nearby city of Andria.

During the raid, authorities apprehended ten individuals, primarily from Ukraine and Bulgaria, who were living in makeshift accommodations within the factory premises. These suspects have been reported to the judicial authorities on charges of smuggling and counterfeiting.

This operation highlights ongoing challenges faced by European nations in combatting organized crime and illegal trade, particularly in the tobacco sector. The Financial Police's swift action demonstrates a commitment to tackling such activities that undermine the economy and public health.
