A significant fire broke out at a wood storage facility in Essen-Borbeck on Wednesday evening, prompting a swift response from local firefighting units. The alarm was raised around 10:18 PM when residents reported seeing flames in the vicinity of Grasstraße.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that what appeared to be a small fire had escalated into a large blaze consuming approximately 30 square meters of stacked timber. The flames were intense, threatening to spread to nearby vegetation and forested areas.

In light of the fire's severity, the incident command quickly escalated the alarm level and requested additional resources. Firefighters deployed multiple B- and C-hoses to combat the flames and prevent further spread.

The extensive size of the woodpile complicated surface extinguishing efforts. To address this, the city's Green Spaces Department, Grün und Gruga, was called in to assist. Using a grab excavator, they helped dismantle the burning wood to effectively extinguish hidden hot spots. This collaborative approach has proven successful in similar past incidents.

Fire crews from the Borbeck, Stadthafen, and Kray stations, along with volunteer firefighters from Essen-Kupferdreh, worked diligently throughout the night, undertaking complex follow-up operations to ensure the fire was fully controlled.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and the Essen police have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. The firefighting operation lasted approximately six hours, with a peak of 25 personnel on the scene.
