Malaysia to Mediate in Ongoing Thailand-Cambodia Border Dispute

In a significant development regarding the long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, Malaysia has been designated as the mediator in the ongoing conflict. This decision was confirmed by Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, amid escalating violence in the border region that has persisted for four consecutive days.

Both Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of artillery attacks, intensifying the already fraught situation. The Malaysian Foreign Minister announced that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are expected to arrive in Malaysia on Monday evening for discussions. Hasan stated that both leaders have expressed their full confidence in Malaysia's ability to facilitate the negotiation process and have requested that Malaysia take on the role of mediator without the involvement of any other nations.

This diplomatic initiative follows a proposal by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who suggested establishing a ceasefire as a preliminary step towards peace. U.S. President Donald Trump also reported that he had engaged with the leaders of both countries, who agreed to meet promptly in an effort to negotiate a ceasefire and ultimately reach a lasting peace agreement.

The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has its roots in a century-old disagreement over the delineation of their shared border, which spans over 800 kilometers. This ongoing dispute has historically led to violent confrontations between the two nations, with the most recent clashes resulting in over 30 fatalities and the displacement of more than 130,000 individuals.
