Neu-Ulm, Bavaria - A significant fire broke out on Saturday evening in an apartment building, prompting an emergency response that resulted in multiple injuries. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM in a ground-floor apartment of a six-story building.
Residents reported that the fire started shortly after the tenant and his girlfriend returned home, discovering flames in their unit. Prior to their arrival, other occupants had already contacted emergency services due to a strong smell of smoke filling the building.
The fire attracted a large emergency response, with nearly 100 firefighters and police officers mobilizing to the scene on Elsa-Brandström-Straße. Upon arrival, they began evacuating all individuals still inside the structure as acrid smoke rapidly spread through the hallways.
In total, 25 people sustained smoke inhalation injuries, and five of these individuals required hospitalization for treatment. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames in the affected apartment, preventing further spread to adjacent units.
Although the fire was contained, several apartments on the ground floor and the first floor have been rendered temporarily uninhabitable. The displaced residents have been provided with emergency accommodation until they can return to their homes.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a technical defect may have caused the fire. The estimated property damage is in the upper five-figure range, according to local police reports.
