Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia - A devastating fire broke out in a multi-family residence in Leverkusen during the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two men and injuries to four others. Emergency services were alerted shortly before midnight to the incident in the Opladen district.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the entire third floor engulfed in flames. The quick response of numerous firefighting units was crucial as they battled the blaze for several hours. Dramatic scenes unfolded as thick smoke filled the stairwell, trapping several residents inside their apartments.

In a desperate attempt to escape, one woman managed to reach a window ledge on the third floor just in time to avoid the raging inferno. Firefighters deployed extendable ladders to rescue five residents from the burning building. One individual had escaped prior to the firefighters' arrival but sustained minor injuries.

Tragically, for two men, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Rescuers attempted to revive the victims on site, but they succumbed to their injuries shortly after the emergency services arrived.

Among the injured, three were transported to the hospital with serious burn injuries and suspected smoke inhalation. The structural integrity of the building's roof has been compromised, posing a risk of collapse. Consequently, the residence has been deemed uninhabitable.

Several unaffected residents were relocated to nearby emergency shelters operated by the Red Cross or stayed with relatives for the night. Firefighting operations continued into the early morning hours, and a structural engineer has been called in to assess the building. As of now, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Authorities have lifted the roadblocks that were previously in place surrounding the area.
