Left Party in Berlin to Continue Focusing on Social Issues After Bundestag Elections

Mon 24th Feb, 2025

Following the recent Bundestag elections, the Left Party in Berlin has expressed its commitment to maintaining pressure on the current black-red coalition regarding social and housing policies. The party attributes its electoral success to its focus on these critical issues.

Maximilian Schirmer, the party's regional chairman, emphasized that the public sentiment was clear: voters were discontent with the rising costs of living and housing in Berlin. The Left Party garnered 19.9 percent of the second votes, unexpectedly placing it first across the city. Additionally, it achieved significant success in four electoral districts for the first votes.

Schirmer remarked that the election results reflect a rejection of the policies implemented by the black-red government, which he characterized as socially unjust. He stated that the party views this outcome as a mandate to continue addressing the pressing issues that affect Berlin residents.

According to Schirmer, there has been a noticeable withdrawal of state services in areas where they are most needed. He pointed out the lack of social programs, community centers, and counseling services in these neighborhoods. The Left Party has made it clear that they will not allow the city to be subjected to a social decline.

"Our strategy has involved engaging directly in the communities facing the most severe challenges," Schirmer noted. He reiterated the party's intention to keep the spotlight on the issue of rising rents, which remains a top concern for many residents.

As the party moves forward, it aims to build on the momentum gained during the elections and continue advocating for social justice and affordable housing in Berlin.
