Calls for Leadership Change at Deutsche Bahn Intensify

Sat 19th Apr, 2025

Calls for a swift transition in leadership at Deutsche Bahn are gaining momentum, with political figures from both the Union and SPD advocating for a fresh start for the state-owned enterprise. Concerns have been raised regarding the performance of the current management, particularly in light of ongoing issues with train punctuality and the condition of the rail network.

Ulrich Lange, the deputy chair of the Union faction, emphasized that the time to act is now, asserting that the leadership's decisions should not be postponed until the end of the legislative term. He expressed dissatisfaction with the outcomes delivered by the board and supervisory council over the past few years, stating that a restructuring of the board is necessary.

Currently led by Richard Lutz, who has held the position since March 2017, the board of Deutsche Bahn consists of eight members. Lange has indicated that it should be streamlined by one-third to enhance effectiveness. The coalition agreement highlights the need for a reorganization of both the supervisory board and the management team at Deutsche Bahn, aiming to reflect greater expertise and improve operational efficiency.

The push for change is fueled by persistent problems within Deutsche Bahn, which reported that only 62.5% of long-distance trains were on time last year. The infrastructure is in dire need of repair, with significant renovations planned for heavily trafficked routes in the coming years, requiring substantial investment running into billions of euros. The Riedbahn line between Frankfurt and Mannheim was among the first to undergo major renovations last year, as the company grapples with financial losses amounting to billions.

Given the current state of affairs, Lange noted that the dissatisfaction with the management extends beyond just the board. He emphasized that effective oversight is crucial, and called for a reduction in the size of the governing bodies to ensure more efficient governance. The ongoing issues with Deutsche Bahn's services have prompted a broader conversation about the future direction of the company and its leadership.
