Kia Introduces Affordable Electric Van to Compete with VW Bulli in Germany

Fri 9th May, 2025

In a significant move to disrupt the electric van market in Germany and across Europe, Kia has announced the launch of its new model, the PV5. This modern and cost-effective electric vehicle is aimed at providing an alternative to the iconic VW Bulli, promising to introduce fresh competition into the segment of light commercial vehicles.

The Kia PV5 is set to enter the German market by the end of 2025, with a cargo version expected first, followed by a passenger variant in 2026. This initiative marks Kia's entry into the electric light commercial vehicle sector, positioning the brand against well-established players such as Volkswagen and Ford.

Unlike competitors that typically modify existing combustion-engine models for electric use, Kia has opted for a completely new design. The PV5 is built on a dedicated electric platform, often referred to as a 'skateboard' architecture, which is designed around the battery. This innovative approach allows for more spacious interiors and enhanced operational efficiency, setting the PV5 apart from its rivals.

The Kia PV5 will be available with two battery options: a 51.5 kWh and a 71.2 kWh, with plans for a smaller 43.3 kWh version in the future. Depending on the specific configuration, the electric van is expected to deliver a range of approximately 397 kilometers on a single charge. Furthermore, the vehicle boasts rapid charging capabilities, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes--an attractive feature for business users who require quick turnaround times.

Powering the PV5 is a front-mounted electric motor that delivers 120 kW (approximately 163 horsepower) and a torque of 250 Newton-meters. This performance is expected to make the PV5 suitable for various applications, whether as a delivery vehicle in urban areas or for tradespeople needing reliable transport for tools and equipment.

Price-wise, the Kia PV5 is positioned significantly lower than its competitors. The starting price for the PV5 is set at EUR32,930 (net), making it a more financially attractive option compared to the VW ID. Buzz Cargo, which currently begins at around EUR42,720.

Kia's ambitions extend beyond just the PV5. During the Kia EV Day held in February 2025, the company revealed plans to develop a comprehensive range of electric vans. This includes the smaller PV1, targeting the VW Caddy segment, and the larger PV7, aimed at competing with the Mercedes Sprinter. These developments highlight Kia's strategy to strengthen its position in the growing European market for electric commercial vehicles.

As Kia prepares to roll out the PV5, it aims to capture a significant share of the electric transport sector, providing customers with a reliable, efficient, and more affordable alternative to existing models.
