Kenya Faces Rising Tensions Following Fatal Protests

Tue 8th Jul, 2025

Kenya is experiencing heightened tensions in the wake of deadly protests that have resulted in 11 fatalities, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba pro-democracy uprising. Although calm has returned to many regions, northeastern Embu County remains a hotspot for unrest.

On Tuesday, following the arrest of a local lawmaker, demonstrations erupted anew in Embu. Protesters, accusing the government of political persecution, erected barricades and set bonfires, disrupting traffic throughout the area. The lawmaker, Gitonga Mukunji, has been accused by authorities of inciting unrest on the anniversary of the Saba Saba uprising.

In the central city of Kiambu, public outrage flared over the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl who was killed by a stray bullet during the protests. Hundreds took to the streets demanding justice for her family, highlighting the emotional toll of the recent violence.

According to police reports, over 560 individuals were apprehended during the unrest on Saba Saba Day, where demonstrators called for the resignation of President William Ruto. This incident adds to a troubling trend of anti-government protests in Kenya, with a previous clash on June 25 resulting in at least 19 deaths and over 400 injuries.

Critics of the government's response have voiced concerns over its heavy-handed tactics, claiming that the authorities are resorting to authoritarian measures in an attempt to quell dissent. This sentiment was echoed by a governance advisor who criticized the government's approach as overly aggressive and detrimental to public safety.

The protests have been largely driven by the frustrations of the youth, particularly the Gen Z demographic, who express discontent over widespread corruption, economic challenges, and inadequate governance. Many young Kenyans are demanding an end to police brutality and increased opportunities for employment and social equality.

Local business owners are grappling with the fallout from the unrest, as shops have been vandalized or looted. Many entrepreneurs are concerned that the ongoing violence is jeopardizing their livelihoods, urging government officials to engage with the youth in dialogue to address their grievances.

The decentralized nature of the protests is contributing to their unpredictability, as young demonstrators often operate without formal leadership or party affiliation, focusing instead on shared frustrations and aspirations.

In anticipation of escalating tensions, the Kenyan Interior Minister has assured the public of the government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Security forces are reportedly on high alert to counter any attempts to disrupt peaceful gatherings.

However, analysts warn that the government may be underestimating the depth of public dissatisfaction. There is a growing urgency for authorities to acknowledge the voices of young Kenyans and engage in meaningful dialogue to address their concerns.
