Jindal Steel International, a prominent Indian steel manufacturer, has put forth a proposal to acquire the steel division of Thyssenkrupp AG. The company has submitted a non-binding indicative offer aimed at acquiring Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe. The management intends to thoroughly assess this proposal, focusing on the long-term economic viability, the continuation of the green transformation, and the preservation of jobs at various locations.
Thyssenkrupp has not disclosed specific details regarding the offer. However, the union IG Metall has expressed support for the potential investment by Jindal Steel. Jürgen Kerner, a key figure in IG Metall, remarked that the involvement of a growth-oriented steel company like Jindal Steel as a strategic investor is a positive sign for employees. He emphasized the need for prompt and substantive discussions to move forward.
Jindal Steel boasts its own access to raw materials and has a track record in environmentally friendly steel production. According to IG Metall, Thyssenkrupp's CEO, Miguel López, has already informed the supervisory board about the offer.
Thyssenkrupp Steel, Germany's largest steel producer, is currently facing significant challenges, including economic downturns, rising energy costs, and competition from low-cost imports from Asia. As a result, the company has announced plans to reduce its production capacity from 11.5 million tons annually to approximately nine million tons, which could lead to the elimination or outsourcing of around 11,000 jobs. However, the company has stated that there will be no layoffs due to operational reasons.
Additionally, Thyssenkrupp is exploring options for becoming a standalone entity. The Czech energy firm EPH, owned by entrepreneur Daniel Kretínský, already holds a 20% stake in Thyssenkrupp and is seeking to establish a 50:50 joint venture with the company.
