Istanbul Mayor Appeals for Germany's Support in Eurofighter Jet Delivery

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025
Ekrem Imamoglu, the detained Mayor of Istanbul, has urged the future German government not to hinder the delivery of Eurofighter jets to Turkey. In a recent post on social media, he emphasized the urgent need for these aircraft by the Turkish Air Force, stating that they have been long-awaited. Imamoglu called for the decision to be made independently of the Turkish administration, asserting that Turkey is larger than any single political figure, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He highlighted that national interests should take precedence over individual political leaders. Germany recently shifted its stance on arms exports to Turkey, allowing significant deliveries to the NATO ally for the first time in years. Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed openness to supplying 40 Eurofighter jets during a visit to Turkey. However, as Germany is part of a European joint project, any export of these jets requires the federal government's approval. Imamoglu's appeal is in response to a Handelsblatt report indicating that the outgoing coalition government is blocking the export of Eurofighters, which are produced in collaboration with the UK. He implored the prospective government, led by CDU's Friedrich Merz, to reconsider this decision, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing Turkey's national interests. The German Ministry of Economy, responsible for arms exports, stated that the current government will not preemptively decide on significant export control issues, implying that a final decision regarding the Eurofighter delivery has yet to be made. Since his arrest, Imamoglu has primarily focused on domestic political issues, criticizing the actions of the ruling AKP government, which has faced allegations of increasingly authoritarian governance. Following his detention on March 19, he was subsequently imprisoned and removed from his position as mayor, an action widely perceived as politically motivated, sparking widespread protests in Turkey and leading to further arrests of opposition figures.
