Iran Commemorates the 1979 Revolution Anniversary

Mon 10th Feb, 2025

On February 10, the Iranian populace gathered in large numbers to commemorate the anniversary of the 1979 Revolution. State-organized events saw crowds taking to the streets in cities like Tehran and various provinces, showcasing their allegiance by waving the flags of the Islamic Republic. Traditionally, these gatherings attract hundreds of thousands to millions of participants across the nation.

Reports from eyewitnesses indicated heightened security measures surrounding the events in the capital. Military displays included the exhibition of ballistic missiles in central Tehran. Additionally, demonstrators engaged in the symbolic act of burning U.S. flags, a common gesture during such commemorations. Notably, there was an expression of discontent directed not only toward U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but also tech billionaire Elon Musk.

The revolution, which took place in February 1979, was led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and resulted in the overthrow of the monarchy. Following this upheaval, Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran later that year, leading to a severance of diplomatic relations that has persisted to this day. Since then, tensions have periodically escalated between Iran and both the U.S. and Israel, with recent incidents occurring as recently as last year.

Despite the grand celebrations, a significant segment of the Iranian population remains indifferent to the festivities. The country is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis, exacerbated by strict sanctions imposed by Western nations, particularly due to concerns surrounding Iran's controversial nuclear program. In a recent development, President Trump expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Tehran; however, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has dismissed the prospect of negotiations with the U.S. for the time being, amidst an alarming decline in the Iranian currency, which has reached record lows.

The Iranian government has exhibited skepticism regarding potential talks with the United States. President Massoud Peseschkian, who previously campaigned on the promise of improving relations with the West, has openly critiqued Trump's stance. He emphasized that while the U.S. accuses Iran of destabilizing the region, it is, in fact, Israel that has been the aggressor in military actions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that Iran would not be coerced into negotiations under pressure.
