Intensified Conflict in Kursk: Uncertainty Surrounds Ukrainian Forces

Sat 15th Mar, 2025

Kiev/Moscow. Ukrainian military units are currently facing significant challenges in the Russian region of Kursk amidst ongoing combat operations. While President Zelensky asserts that their objectives have been largely met, the fighting continues unabated.

Russian forces are reportedly attempting to reclaim territories that had previously fallen under Ukrainian control. According to the acting governor of Kursk, efforts are underway to neutralize mines and unexploded ordnance in areas that have been re-captured. The Ukrainian General Staff has dismissed claims of thousands of their soldiers being encircled in Kursk, which have surfaced from both Russian sources and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense indicate the retaking of the city of Sudscha, although there has been no confirmation from Ukrainian officials. Instead, the Ukrainian military has reported ongoing skirmishes in the Kursk region. An attack by Ukrainian forces in Sudscha resulted in the death of a culture center employee, with two others wounded, according to the local governor, Alexander Chinstein. These reports have not been independently verified.

The situation for Ukrainian troops in Kursk remains precarious, with heavy losses and troop withdrawals contributing to the uncertainty. President Zelensky has acknowledged the dire circumstances, expressing gratitude to the Ukrainian fighters for fulfilling their mission despite the challenges faced.

In a separate statement, President Trump claimed that many Ukrainian soldiers are currently trapped by Russian forces and in a vulnerable condition. To prevent a potential massacre, he has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to spare the lives of these soldiers.

In response, President Putin, who initiated the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has indicated a willingness to allow Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk to surrender for humanitarian reasons. He has called for Ukrainian leadership to instruct their troops to lay down their arms and submit to captivity. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, has threatened the complete destruction of the encircled Ukrainian forces should they refuse to comply.

The Ukrainian administration initially justified their advance into Russian territory last August as a strategy to negotiate the exchange of occupied regions for those they had captured. This operation has resulted in significant casualties among Ukrainian troops, and while Zelensky has referred to it as a success, the current developments raise serious concerns.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to report severe airstrikes from Russian forces, including drone and missile attacks targeting civilian areas. In Krywyj Rih, at least twelve individuals, including two children, were injured during a strike on a residential neighborhood. In Cherson, a 43-year-old man was killed, and four others were injured in a subsequent attack.

Further air raid alerts were reported in the northern city of Chernivtsi and in the Black Sea region of Odessa, where energy facilities were targeted, leading to power outages in some areas.

In a bid to address the ongoing crisis, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has convened a virtual summit with several world leaders to discuss further support for Ukraine. This meeting follows a proposed ceasefire plan by the U.S. government and Ukrainian representatives, which Russia has yet to accept.

Starmer has urged the Kremlin to agree to a ceasefire, arguing that Russia's ongoing rejection indicates a lack of genuine interest in achieving peace. He has called upon international allies to apply economic pressure on Russia to prompt negotiations, emphasizing the need to halt attacks on Ukraine.
