At the recent Computex event, Intel presented a preview of its upcoming Panther Lake processor, specifically the Core Ultra 300, designed for mobile devices. This prototype, showcased to a select group of journalists, demonstrates Intel's advancements in chip technology, utilizing the new Intel 18A manufacturing process.
During the demonstration, functional test systems of the Panther Lake were displayed, although they were not yet integrated into notebooks. Instead, they were mounted on developer boards housed in a desktop configuration. The showcased capabilities included running a large AI language model and the video editing software Da Vinci Resolve, which utilized AI features to dynamically alter objects in video content.
Intel refrained from disclosing specific details regarding the processor's performance metrics, such as clock speeds or core counts. However, there are speculations that the new architecture may feature fewer performance cores compared to its predecessor, the Core Ultra 200H, also known as Arrow Lake.
Panther Lake marks a significant milestone for Intel as it represents the first processor that employs Intel's own manufacturing technology for the compute tiles containing the CPU cores. This new approach utilizes gate-all-around field-effect transistors (GAAFETs) and incorporates backside power delivery for the transistors. Intel aims to compete more effectively with industry leader TSMC by adopting this innovative manufacturing process.
The previous generation, designated as Intel 20A, was abandoned, leading Intel to rely heavily on TSMC-produced chiplets for its current Arrow and Lunar Lake processors in the Core Ultra 200 series.
Mass production of the Panther Lake processors is set to commence in the latter half of the year, with finished notebooks expected to hit the market in 2026. Additionally, various manufacturers displayed potential Panther Lake notebooks in Intel's showroom, hinting at a diverse range of upcoming products.
