Insta360 has launched the latest model in its X series, the Insta360 X5, which features significant upgrades including dual sensors and interchangeable lenses. This new action camera is capable of capturing stunning 360-degree videos in 8K resolution at 30 frames per second, or alternatively, it can shoot 5.7K videos at 60 frames per second. While the resolution and frame rates remain consistent with its predecessor, the X4, the X5 boasts larger 1/1.28-inch sensors, improving its ability to gather light and perform better in low-light conditions.
The camera's larger sensors, with a pixel size of 2.44 um, enhance its dynamic range to 13.5 stops, allowing for more vibrant and detailed imagery. The Insta360 X5 can also export HDR videos, purportedly offering richer details and colors, especially beneficial in challenging lighting situations such as backlit scenes.
One of the standout features of the X5 is its interchangeable lens system. Users can now replace damaged lenses easily using a repair kit available for purchase. The new design includes lens protection options that enhance durability, making the camera suitable for extreme activities like motocross, though there may be a slight sacrifice in image quality when using these protective accessories.
Battery life has also seen an improvement, with the X5 offering up to 180 minutes of recording time under comparable conditions to the X4, which provided about 135 minutes. The camera's charging capability allows for 80% charge in just 20 minutes. Additionally, the X5 has enhanced waterproofing, rated at IP68, allowing it to be submerged up to 15 meters, compared to 10 meters for the X4.
The audio capabilities of the X5 have been upgraded with a stereo microphone shielded by a multi-layer steel mesh to reduce wind noise. An improved audio algorithm further enhances the sound quality during recordings. Following underwater use, the microphone requires approximately 24 hours to dry out before it can capture sound normally again.
Insta360 has introduced a feature known as the InstaFrame mode, which allows simultaneous recording of a full 360-degree video alongside a standard flat video, offering options for fixed or selfie perspectives during playback. The camera intelligently tracks faces in the selfie mode but may occasionally lose sight of them. Users can also manipulate video color and apply AI templates through the mobile application or desktop software.
The Insta360 X5 is now available for purchase, with the standard bundle priced at EUR589.99, which includes the camera, a USB-C cable, a protective case, and a lens cloth. Notably, the bundle does not include lens protection, which can be purchased separately at prices of EUR30.99 for standard protection and EUR42.99 for premium protection. The lens repair kit retails for EUR35.99. It is important to note that the X5 is not compatible with accessories from the X4 due to its redesigned housing.
