A cancer diagnosis can profoundly disrupt an individual's sense of control over their life and health. A recent study from the University of Eastern Finland highlights the significant role that effective communication and meaningful interactions with healthcare professionals play in helping patients regain this sense of control during their treatment journey.
Published in the journal Qualitative Health Research, this collaborative autoethnographic study delves into the experiences of a cancer patient, emphasizing how crucial it is for healthcare providers to foster open lines of communication. When patients feel they are being heard and understood, they are more likely to regain confidence in their ability to manage their health, even amid serious illness.
The study's authors have personal insight into the challenges of cancer, as two of them have battled the disease themselves, while another has cared for a loved one affected by it. They analyzed the experiences of one author who navigated her cancer treatment over an 18-month period, focusing on how communication impacted her sense of control.
Initially, the patient experienced one-sided communication from healthcare providers, which contributed to her feelings of helplessness. Notifications about medical appointments were often conveyed through text messages that did not allow for questions or clarifications, leading to increased anxiety regarding her treatment. Unanticipated changes to schedules and the introduction of additional tests further compounded her uncertainty.
However, as she began to have more personal interactions with her healthcare team, her sense of control began to improve. Engaging dialogues with nurses and doctors allowed her to participate in decisions about her care, while encouragement to utilize the Finnish online health portal, OmaKanta, empowered her to access her medical information directly.
One pivotal moment in her journey occurred when a doctor clarified that although they would oversee her overall treatment, she was responsible for managing aspects such as physical activity, nutrition, and skincare. This delineation of roles significantly enhanced her sense of agency.
Interestingly, the COVID-19 pandemic, while causing delays in treatment, also provided her with unexpected opportunities to feel more in control. For instance, the implementation of safety measures, such as wearing masks, gave her tangible steps to take in protecting her health, contrasting sharply with the unpredictability of her cancer diagnosis.
According to the researchers, the findings underscore that serious illnesses impact not just the physical body, but also the mental and emotional well-being of patients. When individuals feel disregarded or marginalized by their healthcare providers, they may start to believe they have no influence over their treatment.
Meaningful interactions between patients and healthcare professionals are essential for rebuilding a sense of autonomy and self-determination. It is important for patients to have the opportunity to ask questions, engage in decision-making, and feel like integral members of their healthcare teams. While this may require additional time and effort from healthcare providers, it plays a crucial role in enhancing recovery and encouraging healthier behaviors in the future.
