The Rise of High-Value Bicycle Thefts in 2024

Mon 21st Apr, 2025

In a notable shift in the landscape of bicycle theft, insurers report that 2024 has seen a significant focus on high-value bicycles and electric bikes. According to industry experts, this change in tactics indicates that thieves are increasingly targeting more expensive models. Jörg Asmussen, the CEO of the German Insurance Association (GDV), notes that the average loss per theft has surged to approximately EUR1,190, a stark increase compared to two decades ago.

While the total number of insured bicycle thefts decreased in 2024, with approximately 135,000 reported incidents--10,000 fewer than the previous year--the financial repercussions for insurers were unprecedented. The GDV stated that payouts reached a staggering EUR160 million, marking an increase of EUR10 million from the prior year and the highest figure recorded in the last 20 years.

The police have also reported a decline in bicycle thefts, with about 246,000 incidents logged in 2024, representing a decrease of approximately 6.9% from the previous year. This reduction may be attributed to the growing use of GPS trackers and enhanced security measures by bicycle owners. However, the resolution rate for these crimes remains alarmingly low, with only about 24,000 cases solved, indicating that less than 10% of bicycle thefts are successfully resolved.

To mitigate the risks of theft, insurers recommend that bicycle owners invest in high-quality locks. Securing bicycles with two locks--one for the frame and another for the wheels--can significantly enhance protection. The GDV specifically advises using robust U-locks or chain locks as effective deterrents against theft.

Moreover, bicycles should always be secured in well-lit, busy areas to further discourage potential thieves. Registration of bicycles is also encouraged, as it improves the chances of recovery in the event of theft. Regularly reviewing insurance coverage and considering additional insurance for high-value bicycles can provide added peace of mind for owners. Keeping purchase receipts and current photos of the bicycle can also expedite the claims process if theft occurs.
