High Casualties Among North Korean Troops in Putin's Forces

Wed 18th Dec, 2024

The conflict in the Kursk region continues to escalate as Russian President Vladimir Putin deploys inexperienced North Korean soldiers to bolster his forces against Ukraine. Recent reports indicate that these troops have suffered significant losses in ongoing combat operations.

In August 2024, Ukrainian forces made an incursion into Russian territory for the first time since the beginning of the war in February 2022, managing to occupy several areas within the border region. However, following intense fighting, Ukrainian troops were forced to withdraw from some districts. In response, Russia has initiated a counteroffensive, with approximately 50,000 soldiers reportedly involved, including thousands of North Korean troops.

According to a representative from the U.S. military, the North Korean units are experiencing heavy casualties in the current fighting. Estimates suggest that North Korea has incurred several hundred losses, which encompass both fatalities and injuries across all ranks. The representative emphasized that these troops lack combat experience, having never engaged in battle before.

Reports from various sources highlight the lack of tactical awareness among the North Korean soldiers on the battlefield. An account describes how these troops have been observed moving across open fields, presenting easy targets for Ukrainian drones and artillery. A Ukrainian drone commander noted that the North Korean soldiers seem oblivious to the dangers posed by aerial attacks, as they were seen running in groups of 40 to 50, making them vulnerable to strikes.

Further insights from the Ukrainian Security Council reveal that North Korean soldiers appear to react unusually to the threat of drones. The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation reported that these soldiers failed to recognize the danger posed by UAVs before their attacks, suggesting inadequate training or information regarding the use of drones in combat.

As the situation develops, it is clear that both sides of the conflict continue to suffer substantial losses. The involvement of North Korean troops in this conflict raises questions about the effectiveness and preparedness of these forces in a complex warfare environment. The dynamics of the fighting in Kursk and the broader implications for both Russian and Ukrainian military strategies remain to be seen.
