Fighting has erupted along the border between Lebanon and Syria following the abduction of Syrian soldiers by the Hezbollah militia. Reports indicate that parts of northern Lebanon have come under fire from Syrian territory, leading the Lebanese Armed Forces to respond.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense has deployed troops, rocket launchers, and drones to the border area, as confirmed by military sources. These forces reportedly destroyed a Hezbollah weapons depot, and according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syrian troops have also utilized artillery and rockets in the confrontation.
According to Syrian officials, three soldiers from the transitional government fell into an ambush set by Hezbollah militants on Sunday. The militia allegedly captured the soldiers in Homs province, subsequently transporting them to Lebanon where they were later killed. Disturbing footage purportedly showing the brutal murder of one of the captives has surfaced online.
Relations between Lebanon and Syria have remained tense and at times hostile for decades. Hezbollah had been one of the principal allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in December. The transitional government in Syria aims to establish stability and regain control over the border region, which had been under Hezbollah's influence and served as a crucial supply route for the militia.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense has stated that it will take all necessary actions in response to Hezbollah's dangerous escalation. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has denied any responsibility for the recent clashes, as reported by the Lebanese news agency NNA.
The Lebanese Armed Forces have announced that they are in contact with Syrian authorities to stabilize the situation along the border. The bodies of the three slain soldiers have been returned to Syrian officials.
