Hendrik Streeck Appointed as New Federal Drug Commissioner

The German government has appointed virologist Hendrik Streeck as the new Federal Drug Commissioner. Streeck, known for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, was proposed for the position by Health Minister Nina Warken. The announcement was made by the federal health ministry in Berlin.

At 47 years of age, Streeck, a member of the CDU, emphasized his commitment to a constructive approach rather than admonishing others. He highlighted the urgent need to provide better protection for children and adolescents against addiction, digital threats, and emerging harmful substances.

Streeck entered the Bundestag following the election held on February 23, 2025. He has been the director of the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn since 2019. In his new role, he succeeds SPD politician Burkhard Blienert as the government's representative on issues related to addiction and drugs.

Alongside Streeck's appointment, the cabinet has also designated Katrin Staffler, a CSU member, as the new representative for nursing care. Meanwhile, Stefan Schwartze from the SPD continues in his role as the government's patients' representative, a position he has held since the previous legislative term.

Health Minister Warken noted the importance of engaging with affected individuals in health policy discussions. She described Streeck as a well-regarded scientist whose medical expertise will aid in moderating the often emotionally charged debates surrounding drug policy.

One of the pivotal issues in this legislative period is expected to be the discussion surrounding the legalization of cannabis. Both the Union and the SPD have planned an 'open-ended evaluation' of the situation this autumn. A preliminary evaluation had already set the stage for the legalization framework, which has permitted the consumption of cannabis for adults under certain restrictions since April 1, 2024.
