Tue 30th Sep, 2025

During a cabinet meeting held in Berlin, Transportation Minister Patrick Schnieder experienced a health crisis, collapsing at the table due to a circulatory collapse. Although his condition improved shortly after the incident, he was taken to the hospital for precautionary examinations. This unexpected episode occurred during the initial cabinet retreat led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed that Schnieder, 57, lost consciousness momentarily, necessitating medical attention. He was unable to participate in the official group photograph of the cabinet, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. In addition to Schnieder's incident, Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer was also absent from the group photo due to a personal matter involving a family bereavement, which led him to leave the meeting early.

The two-day retreat, hosted at Villa Borsig, focused on enhancing Germany's competitiveness and modernizing state operations. The cabinet members convened with the intention of addressing various pressing issues affecting the nation.

As the cabinet convenes to engage in critical discussions about the future of public transport and other infrastructure projects, Schnieder's health crisis serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of political life and the personal toll it can take on public officials. The government is expected to provide updates on Schnieder's condition and the outcomes of their discussions during this significant meeting.
