Sachsen-Anhalt's Minister-President Haseloff to Step Down Ahead of 2026 Elections

Thu 7th Aug, 2025

In a significant political development, Reiner Haseloff, the long-serving Minister-President of Sachsen-Anhalt, has announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming state elections scheduled for September 6, 2026. Haseloff, who has held the position since 2011, is the longest-serving state leader in Germany. His decision comes as the political landscape in the region becomes increasingly competitive.

In the previous election cycle in 2021, Haseloff initially expressed his intention not to run again but ultimately reversed that decision. Currently, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is in coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Sachsen-Anhalt. However, this coalition could face challenges in the upcoming election as the Alternative for Germany (AfD), led by its candidate Ulrich Siegmund, 34, is vying for governmental control.

The AfD is gaining traction, particularly following a strong performance in the recent federal elections, where they secured 37.1% of the second votes, significantly outperforming the CDU, which garnered only 19.2%. This shift in voter sentiment raises concerns for the established parties in the region.

Haseloff's leadership had previously proven effective in keeping the AfD from winning the top position in the last state elections. Many within the CDU had hoped that Haseloff could replicate this success. Speculation had circulated regarding whether he would leverage his established political standing to run once more; however, his recent announcement confirms that he will make way for a new candidate.

The CDU has appointed a less widely recognized figure, who has been serving in Haseloff's cabinet as the Minister for Economic Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture, and Forestry since 2021, to lead the party into the electoral battle. This individual, who has prior experience as a Member of the European Parliament, will be tasked with revitalizing the party's image and addressing the challenges posed by the rising popularity of the AfD.

The political climate in Sachsen-Anhalt is shifting, and with the 2026 elections on the horizon, the strategic decisions made by the CDU in the coming months will be crucial in determining their future in the state.
