Wed 12th Mar, 2025

Hannover is bracing for significant disruptions on Thursday, March 13, 2025, as a full-day strike in public transportation is set to coincide with several planned demonstrations. The labor union ver.di has organized seven gatherings throughout the city, with six of these being processions that will ultimately converge into a central assembly at the Opera Square.

The demonstrations are part of ongoing negotiations regarding public sector wages, and organizers expect attendance to reach up to 15,000 participants for the concluding rally at the Opera Square.

As a result of the planned events, streets along the procession routes will be subject to closures, leading to considerable traffic disruptions particularly in the areas of Lavesallee, Friederikenplatz, Friedrichswall, Aegidientorplatz, Schiffgraben, and Marienstraße. Commuters in the affected areas should prepare for significant delays during peak hours.

Notably, the area surrounding the Opera Square will be entirely closed to traffic starting around 10:30 AM, further impacting the city's traffic flow.

The strike affecting public transport will additionally heighten congestion in the downtown area, complicating the situation for those attempting to navigate the city. The Hannover police are advising residents to avoid unnecessary car trips into the city center, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours, recommending alternative modes of transport such as walking or cycling where possible.

The police have also urged all motorists to keep intersections and emergency routes clear to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles during the anticipated traffic delays.
