Guatemala Declares State of Emergency Following Prison Uprisings

The Guatemalan government has imposed a nationwide state of emergency after a series of violent uprisings erupted in multiple correctional facilities across the country. These disturbances, which involved inmates seizing control of sections within three major prisons, have led to heightened security measures and the suspension of public activities, including school closures.

Officials reported that the unrest began when prisoners at the facilities in Guatemala City, Escuintla, and Quetzaltenango overpowered guards and took approximately 40 prison staff members hostage. During the standoff, inmates were seen occupying watchtowers and demanding improvements to living conditions within the prisons. Security forces later intervened, regaining control of the affected institutions and safely resolving the hostage situation, according to statements from authorities.

The Ministry of Interior attributed the riots to recent policies targeting organized crime leaders incarcerated within the prison system. In a bid to dismantle the influence of criminal organizations behind bars, authorities had recently revoked various privileges, conducted raids, and confiscated illegal items such as mobile phones, weapons, and drugs. Unauthorized structures within the prisons were also demolished as part of the crackdown.

Following the suppression of the uprisings, a series of retaliatory attacks were reported in the greater Guatemala City area. These incidents targeted law enforcement personnel, resulting in the deaths of at least eight police officers and one suspected gang member. Several arrests have been made in connection with these attacks as security forces intensify their operations to restore order.

In response to the escalating crisis, the government has deployed additional police and military personnel to reinforce security at key locations and maintain public order. Citizens have been strongly advised to remain indoors as the authorities carry out their operations. All educational activities scheduled for Monday were canceled nationwide as a precautionary measure.

This wave of unrest follows a period of heightened scrutiny of Guatemala's prison system. In recent months, the government has undertaken significant reforms, including the replacement of senior security officials after reports emerged of mass escapes involving dozens of gang members. These developments have prompted renewed efforts to strengthen oversight and improve the management of detention facilities across the country.

President Bernardo Arévalo reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and combating organized crime. Officials emphasized that ongoing efforts aim to disrupt criminal networks operating within and outside the prison system while ensuring the safety of the general population.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the uprisings and subsequent attacks, with further security measures expected to remain in place for the duration of the 30-day state of emergency. The government has called for public cooperation as it moves to stabilize the situation and restore normalcy throughout Guatemala.
