Government Flight Data Exposes Scholz Cabinet to Criticism Over Hypocrisy

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

The Scholz administration is facing significant backlash after the revelation that it utilized military aircraft for over 1,800 official flights since taking office nearly three years ago. A recent analysis conducted ahead of the upcoming 2025 federal election indicated that the Chancellor's office led the count, with 611 flights recorded from December 2021 to the end of last year.

According to a response from the Ministry of Defense to an inquiry from BSW parliament member Sevim Dagdelen, the Foreign Office (363 flights), the Ministry of Defense (168 flights), and the Ministry of the Interior (155 flights) followed closely behind in flight usage. This extensive flight activity has prompted Dagdelen to accuse the Scholz government of double standards, highlighting a disparity between the government's calls for citizens to reduce their carbon footprints while government officials travel lavishly at taxpayer expense.

This is not the first time the issue of government flights has drawn criticism. Previous instances included expenditures exceeding 500,000 euros related to flights during the last UEFA European Championship, with the Left Party in the Bundestag condemning such behavior as reckless. In contrast, the Defense Ministry has defended these flights as necessary operational expenses.

Earlier inquiries had revealed that members of the cabinet generally opt against commercial flights due to the complexities involved in planning such travel. Currently, the military's air transport service, known as the Flugbereitschaft, operates 15 aircraft of various sizes and two helicopters. For international trips, the Chancellor typically uses one of three Airbus A350 jets, which are 67 meters long and have a range of 18,000 kilometers.

The tally of government flights also includes a substantial number of empty flights, as the air transport service is stationed in Cologne-Wahn. The 1,822 official flights recorded by the government coincided with approximately 1,807 empty flights, which the Defense Ministry claims are utilized for training and other official purposes.

As the 2025 Bundestag elections approach, discussions surrounding the government's flight practices are expected to intensify, underscoring the ongoing debate about accountability and environmental responsibility among public officials.
