Google Unveils Beta Versions of Android 16 for Hardware Partners

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

In a significant development for Android enthusiasts, Google has announced the release of Beta 4 for Android 16, introducing the first smartphones from hardware partners for testing. This move broadens the accessibility of the beta program beyond Google's own devices, such as the Pixel 6 and newer models.

The announcement indicates that Beta 4 is the last planned update in the Android 16 beta program, although minor updates may still be issued to address any lingering issues. Among the partners joining the beta initiative are renowned manufacturers like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Honor, and Lenovo, all focusing on providing early versions of Android 16 for their flagship devices.

It is important to note that the test builds from these partners are based on earlier beta versions rather than the latest Beta 4. Consequently, the installation process may be more complex, as these builds are primarily targeted at developers, potentially making them less user-friendly compared to Google's offerings.

As for the enhancements in Beta 4, while there are no groundbreaking new features, users will notice some cosmetic changes. For instance, the status bar clock appears slightly larger, and the Always-On Display clocks have received dynamic color updates. Additionally, the media player interface, both on the lock screen and within quick settings, has been darkened for a more cohesive aesthetic. The platform stability achieved in the previous beta version has been maintained in this release.

Looking ahead, if Android 16 is set to feature more substantial updates, Google is expected to unveil these during the upcoming I/O developer conference scheduled for May 20. The final version of Android 16 is anticipated to launch in June, at which point the update will be available not only for Pixel devices but also through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
