The craft of gold and silversmithing has been officially recognized as an intangible cultural heritage in Germany, a designation that highlights its historical significance and ongoing practice. This accolade was awarded following a nomination submitted by the Central Association of German Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, based in Cottbus, to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In Germany, approximately 5,600 businesses actively engage in the art of gold and silversmithing, a trade that boasts a rich tradition in Brandenburg. According to the state's Minister of Culture, the region has been home to numerous skilled artisans in this field for centuries. Notably, Brandenburg is also the location of Germany's largest prehistoric gold find, discovered in Eberswalde, underscoring the area's historical connection to the craft.
The origins of gold and silversmithing date back to around 4,500 years before Christ, with a significant flourishing of the craft occurring during the Middle Ages. During this period, various guilds dedicated to gold and silversmithing emerged across Germany, establishing a legacy that continues today in the form of small-scale workshops where artisans practice their trade.
The designation of this craft as an intangible cultural heritage spotlights the vibrant cultural practices that have been passed down through generations. These practices are not limited to the artistic aspects of the craft but also encompass a wide range of cultural expressions, including dance, theater, music, oral traditions, customs, festivals, and traditional healing methods.
Currently, there are 168 entries in the national registry of intangible cultural heritage in Germany, with notable examples from Brandenburg such as the manual production of blown hollow and flat glass in Baruth and the customs and festivals of the Lusatian Sorbs.
